USING SPREADSHEETS
Foreign Exchange

The children could use a spreadsheet to convert amounts of currency. Use the internet, banks, travel agencies and newspaper to find out the current exchange rates for foreign currencies.

Show the children how to enter this information into the spreadsheet. The example shows a spreadsheet for five foreign currencies, using amounts of sterling up to £10. Different groups of children could enter formulae for each cell in the spreadsheet until the sheet is complete.

The children will now have a “ready reckoner” for converting different amounts of money. Ask them to compare this method with others, such as calculators. The children could use newspapers to find out about fluctuations in exchange rates. they could alter the exchange rate on the spreadsheet so that when data in a cell is changed, children can see how the spreadsheet operates as a model.
