Handling Data- Introduction to databases - Possible Scheme of Work

Identify and develop a means of collection, and collect appropriate data.
Create graphs and use data to answer questions.

Year Group some children will not have made so much progress and will most children will some children will have progressed further and will
Y3 Collect, organise and classify data. Create graphs and use these to answer questions

Identify and develop a means of collection, and collect appropriate data. Create graphs and use data to answer questions.

E.g. Design a questionnaire about playground activities and collate and present information electronically

In order to answer a question children collect, organise, classify and interpret data and develop a simple database.

E.g. In order to answer questions about traffic outside school, pupils survey, graph and interpret results in order to identify the busiest times of day

  • I know that ICT can be used to store information.
  • I know that collecting and storing information in an organized way, helps me find answers to questions
  • I know how to find an answer to a simple question.
  • I can enter data and find a record.
  • I know that information on record cards is divided into fields
  • I can select a record and identify fields of similar information
  • I know that information can be held as numbers, choices (yes/no) or words.
  • I know that information can be taken from pictures or text.
  • I can select a numeric field and sort the data to find 'biggest' and 'smallest'.
  • I can produce a bar chart, and explain what it shows.
  • I am learning to use search, sort and graph to answer questions.
  • I can create a simple database, explaining my method of organising information

1

Gather information from a variety of sources.

To create records to store key information.

Pupils create a set of record cards which contain information about each pupil e.g. name, age etc.

Records
Fields

Blank record cards

Level 2:
I can use ICT to organise and classify information.

Level 3:
I can use ICT to find and use appropriate stored information.

I can follow a simple search to find information when using a database.

2

Gather information from a variety of sources.

To use records to find information.

Pupils use a set of pre-prepared record cards to answer questions e.g. how many minibeasts have 6 legs or wings?

Records
Fields
Search

Database e.g. Information Magic / Textease Database

3

Enter and store information in a variety of forms.

To store key information using a database.

Show pupils how to move from one record to another within a pre-prepared database e.g. Ourselves.  Pupils add their own information.

Database
Records
Fields

Database e.g. Information Magic / Textease Database

4

Interpret information, to check it is relevant and reasonable.

To search for information using a database.

Pupils search the database to answer simple questions e.g. how many children have blue eyes?
