  • E-Safety Links - Range of teaching resources to teach smart online skills

The variety of stories in Myths and Legends aims to give inspiration to young people at school and at home to create and publish their own work. The site provides a multitude of tools and opportunities that enable pupils to submit their stories for the enjoyment of a world wide audience, with the prospect of receiving peer review and evaluation.

excelUsing a Spreadsheet (Excel)

Use a spreadsheet to explore outcomes for a variety of problems Change the set up of the spreadsheet by altering formula if and when necessary. Children may wish to use a spreadsheet to help to sort and graph some data they have gathered. They should be encouraged to set up their own simple spreadsheets, but will need some support.

A spreadsheet is another tool for handling data. It consists of cells or boxes into which text, numbers or formulae can be entered. Figures can be changed in one column and the results of those changes can be viewed in another. Using spreadsheets allows the children to practice conceptual modelling : seeing the results of “What will happen if........? questions.

The children in P5, entered data into a simple spreadsheet. In P6 the children set up their own simple spreadsheet. In P7 the children need to alter and change the formula inside the cells.

Controlling and Programming a more advanced Robot

  • Control a robot, and begin to programme a sequence of instructions to instruct it to perform a variety of tasks.

Introduction to Control and Simulations and understanding how sensors work

This activity aims to familiarise pupils with the concept of how input devices can control a process. They learn that devices such as light sensors, pressure pads and temperature gauges can measure changes in the environment and that they can then program a computer to carry out a process when it detects some sort of change. They learn some of the control language necessary to program the computer to make such decisions ("until" and "then").

Using Robotic toys

  • Control a lego model - Refine instructions to improve the efficiency (procedure) of the instructions they have created, and be able to link devices together. Be able to choose the appropriate sensors to monitor environmental conditions. Controlling devices
  • Control a lego model - Create a sequence of instructions to control events including the use of feedback from input devices. Controlling & Monitoring
